Niagara Falls is home to the first Hydroelectric Power Station, where the electrification of the world started in 1896. The International Niagara Commission adopted its final decision in October 1893. Offers were accepted from companies which had proposed the implementation of Tesla’s polyphase system: the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, for the application of the power system with three two-phase generators and the General Electric Company, for the three-phase system of transmission and distribution. The construction of the hydroelectric power station started in 1893 and was completed in 1899. The hydroelectric power station on the Niagara River was put into operation on the night of November 15 to 16, 1896. The first electric power transmission was realized between Niagara Falls and the city of Buffalo, 32 km away.

On July 10, the birthday of Nikola Tesla will be celebrated in Niagara Falls. The Celebration is organized by the Serbian School “Nikola Tesla” and Tesla Projects Laboratory Inc. and features numerous free public events.

THEREFORE I, Jim Diodati, Mayor of the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario, do hereby proclaim July 10, 2015, to be NIKOLA TESLA DAY in Niagara Falls, and urge all citizens to be aware of the many ways that groups, businesses, and individuals can employ innovate alternative of generating and saving energy.

NIKOLA TESLA with his inventions created technological advancements that allowed the first Hydroelectric Plant to be built right here in Niagara Falls. Electricity is one of nature’s greatest forces and by the end of the 20th Century, humans had successfully harnessed it to illuminate and power the world. Over the centuries, scientific discoveries and inventions have continuously brought civilizations ahead. However, it was not until the eccentric genius of one man, by the name of Nikola Tesla, that unlocked the full potential of electrical power. In cooperation with Canadian Tesla Technical Museum and Serbian School “Nikola Tesla”, we recognize that this giant leap forward for humanity happened right here in Niagara Falls. Today almost all of the electricity generated in the world is done using Tesla Polyphase System.

THEREFORE … On November 22nd, 2019 we proclaim that the landscape plaza surrounding the Bronze Tesla Statue be named NIKOLA TESLA PLAZA.
