Niagara Falls is home to the first Hydroelectric Power Station, where the electrification of the world started in 1896. The International Niagara Commission adopted its final decision in October 1893. Offers were accepted from companies which had proposed the implementation of Tesla’s polyphase system: the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, for the application of the power system with three two-phase generators and the General Electric Company, for the three-phase system of transmission and distribution. The construction of the hydroelectric power station started in 1893 and was completed in 1899. The hydroelectric power station on the Niagara River was put into operation on the night of November 15 to 16, 1896. The first electric power transmission was realized between Niagara Falls and the city of Buffalo, 32 km away.
